Description

A photograph of a picnic in Lords Park, according to the caption on the photograph. The back of the photograph reads "Margyne [Volkening] in front line, Hannah Meyer Teacher. School District picnic at Lords Park. District 43 1/2 picnic Lords Park." Lords Park is in Elgin.

Margyne Volkening was born in 1925, so as she might be around five in this photograph, the photograph may have been taken circa 1930.

Hoosier Grove School was a one-room schoolhouse constructed in 1904 across the road from the Deutsche Vereinigte church (what would later be known as the Immanuel United Church of Christ). Its original site was at the southwest corner of Barrington Road and Old Church Road, on a corner of the Schueneman Farm and near the Heine Farm. It was in District 43/12, because it was between Hanover and Schaumburg Townships. The school closed its doors to students in 1954 (and there still wasn't running water in the building). It was the last country school in Hanover Township.

In 1974, Gertrude Odlum donated the school to the Streamwood Park District. It moved in 1975 from its original site at the southwest corner of Barrington Road and Old Church Road to 529 Parkside Circle. The school was dedicated on September 21st, 1980. The school moved to its current site at 700 W. Irving Park Road in 1991, where it is a museum at Hoosier Grove Park.
