Description

A photograph of the interior of a blacksmith shop in Ontarioville (now Hanover Park), date unknown. The blacksmith shop offered various metal tools and items (such as the horseshoes that can be seen at the top of the photograph) and repairs for those tools.

Emil Scholer (1861-1905) owned this blacksmith shop. Emil also had a buggy shop next door to the blacksmith shop.

Emil Scholer also built the house next to the blacksmith shop in the late 1890s. (The house is sometimes called the "Scholer/Jenson house" or "Scholer/Jensen house" in sources on the area because Hanover Park's first Village President, Gordon Jensen, lived there.) The house no longer stands. All of these buildings were located near where Hanover Park Animal Care Center currently stands (at 1920 Ontarioville Road).

After Emil's death in 1905, Emil's wife, Caroline, married August Anderson, who ran the shop after Emil's death.

August's stepson, Ed Scholer, helped out in the shop. He was born in 1903, so if he is the child in the photo, this could place the date of the photograph around 1915.
